In the world of investing, the buy-and-hold strategy is a long-term approach where an investor purchases a stock or an ETF and keeps it for many years, regardless of short-term market swings. The concept is straightforward. Over time, strong companies tend to grow in value, and by remaining invested through the ups and downs, the long-term upward trend of the market becomes the primary source of profit.

While this sounds convincing at first glance, it is worth examining the idea more closely because appearances can be deceiving.

The buy-and-hold strategy is effective only when the right company is selected. A business with strong fundamentals, a lasting competitive advantage, reliable management, and a forward-looking vision is the kind of company that can be held confidently for many years. On the other hand, a company with weak leadership, heavy debt, or shrinking relevance cannot be rescued simply by holding its stock for a long period. Time does not repair a poor investment choice.
