Dollar cost averaging, often shortened to DCA, is an investment strategy in which a fixed amount of money is invested at regular intervals such as monthly, weekly, or quarterly. The investment is made consistently regardless of the market price at that moment. This method has been used for decades as a way to reduce the effects of market volatility.

In practical terms, imagine an investor committing one thousand dollars each month to a particular stock. During months when the stock price is high, that fixed amount buys fewer shares. In months when the price drops, the same amount buys more shares. Over time, this pattern evens out the overall cost per share. Some purchases occur at higher prices, others at lower prices, and this removes the pressure of trying to predict the perfect moment to buy.
