Now, owning equity simply means you own a part of that company. You’re not just a bystander; you’re one of the owners. And yes, that might sound a little grand at first—especially when we’re talking about owning a tiny fraction of a giant company like Apple or Google—but it’s true. When you buy shares (which is another word for stock), you’re actually buying a piece of that company. That’s what equity means in the context of the stock market.

But here’s where it gets a little more layered. Sometimes, you’ll hear people talk about private equi ty. And I want to pause here because this used to throw me off too. I’d hear “private equity investing” and think, “Wait, is this just another way to say buy ing stocks?” Not quite.

Private equity isn’t about buying shares on the stock market. Instead, think of it like this: let’s say you have a friend who runs a small bakery and they need funding. They come to you and say, “Can you invest $20,000 in my business? I’ll give you 20% ownership.” If you agree, you now own 20% of that bakery—you’re entitled to 20% of the profits, and you’re now a co-owner. But this deal happens privately, between you and your friend. There’s no stock exchange involved. That’s private equity.

So, to wrap it all together: equity means ownership in a business. When you hear it in stock investing, it usually means owning shares in publicly traded companies—those listed on the stock market. But equity can also exist in private arrangements, where you’re investing directly into a business that isn’t on the stock exchange.

Don’t let the terminology confuse you. At its core, equity is about ownership—whether that’s with a big-name company or your neighbour’s start-up bakery.
