You’ve probably heard terms like index investing, index funds, or index ETF, and maybe you’ve even come across names like the S&P 500 or Dow Jones. But what exactly is an index, and why should you care?

Think of a stock market index as simply a list. Yes, that’s right—a list. But not just any list. It’s a carefully selected group of stocks, usually chosen based on specific criteria, like company size, industry, performance, location, or other attributes..

For example, the S&P 500 is one of the most well-known stock market indexes in the world. It’s a list of 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States. And here’s an important point to note. S&P doesn’t stand for “stocks and prices” or anything like that. It stands for Standard & Poor’s, which is actually the name of the company, S&P Global, that created and maintains the index. Another example is the Hypatia Women CEO Index, which is a list of all publicly traded American companies that have female Chief Executive Officers. I have used American examples, but many indexes include companies in different countries.

Understanding what a stock market index is can really empower you. It helps you see the logic behind a lot of the investment products out there. When you are doing index investing, you’re not just throwing your money into a black box, you’re investing in a list of companies that’s based on certain criteria.

So the next time you hear “index,” just think: it’s a list—and knowing the companies on that list helps you understand the stocks included in the ETF you’re investing in.
